The rules for producing food which can be classified as organic are set by government bodies and organizations such as the Soil Association in the UK. The main principles are as follows:
- Crops should be grown with only synthetic chemicals that are covered under regulations. That means no pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilisers.
- The fields where the crops are grown must have been chemical free for a minimum of three years (excluding those allowed under regulations).
- Crops must be grown using sustainable agricultural practices, crop rotation in fields and only fertilisers allowed under regulations.
- Farms must be approved by the country certification organization to be able to declare their products organic.
- No GMO crops are allowed.
- No irradiation is allowed.
- 95% of ingredients in processed foods must be organic.
- No artificial ingredients such as taste enhancers, preservatives or colours may be used.
- For processed foods such as Seeds of Change®, product inspection and certification is required for both the ingredients and the food processing facility to ensure there is no contamination. In the case of our products, certified representatives of the Soil Association have inspected and certified both our ingredients and the factory.
- Animals must be reared in a safe, free environment. They must be fed organic food and not be administered growth hormones.
- Antibiotics can only be administered under veterinary guidelines when necessary to protect the health of the animal.
