About Seeds of Change®
Seeds of Change® started in 1989 with a simple idea — to offer gardeners and farmers a range of 100% organic seeds.
In 1999 we decided to bring our expertise to the United Kingdom by developing a range of delicious sauces, soups, pasta and cereal bars. This range is organic and free of artificial additives and preservatives. Our aim is to provide a range of good honest food, full of taste and flavour that is also good for you.
"Everyone has the right to eat well. To eat a balanced and diverse diet of pure, wholesome, natural and nutritious food. Food you feel confident about feeding to your family."
This is a guiding principle at Seeds of Change®.
History
Seeds of Change® began as a small seed company in 1989 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. As a group of people we had become increasingly concerned about our environment. We were, and are, concerned about the long-term effects of intensive farming methods on the planet's wonderful biodiversity.
"Biodiversity" is the sum total of all the world's plant, animal and insect life, and all the other organisms that make up the world's ecosystems. The loss of biodiversity affects the actual plants we eat, including heirloom and traditional varieties, as well as affecting the rainforests.
Our Philosophy
We recognise that Nature's starting point for all food is the seed. That's why we've taken everything we've learned from our organic seed farm and used it to make our delicious range of pasta sauces, pastas, cooking sauces, stir-in sauces, soups and cereal bars.
We started our organic seed company farm, Seeds of Change®, with a simple mission:
"To protect the planet's biodiversity and promote organic agricultural practices by offering a diverse range of open-pollinated 100% organic seeds and products. To promote the benefits of organic farming and food. To help people and future generations improve their lives and enjoy wholesome, natural, pure, chemical-free foods."
From Seeds to Food
When we started our seed business, we had to build our growers' network from scratch. Although we can claim today to have some of the best quality seeds in the world, we had to first find farmers who were interested in seeds and, in many cases, educate them in the art of saving seeds. This took time and care, but we feel it was worth it, as we have built strong working partnerships with them.
We've taken the learnings from our seeds and our seed farm and now pick the best varieties to create our delicious range of foods using natural, wholesome, 100% organically grown ingredients.
Our Farm
At Seeds of Change®, we're proud of our beginnings as a seed company. We have built our mission and business on that foundation.
In Santa Fe, we have our own farm and research centre, which acts as a central resource for our activities with farmers and gardeners, providing information and advice.
We believe in partnerships with those we work with, so it is crucial that we practice what we preach. New Mexico is tough farming country, and we put our beliefs to the test every year. We document our learning for use in the seeds we offer, as well as for our own growing body of knowledge on how best to farm organically. In time, we plan to start sharing this knowledge on our Web site directly so that everyone can benefit from these learnings.
Seeds
Today we offer a comprehensive seed selection in catalogues which are only currently available by mail order in the USA.
We have over 2,000 varieties of vegetables, culinary and medicinal flowers, fruits and other plants. Many are rare, heirloom or traditional varieties. All of the seeds we offer, whether produced locally or imported, are open-pollinated varieties and are selected based on flavour, vigour and nutrition. This means gardeners and farmers can have beautiful and productive gardens and farms from which they themselves can save the seed. Today, our seeds are available in the USA. A selection is also available through the HDRA's Organic Gardening Catologue.
